June Clandestine Cake Club - Gluten free!

What an awesome spread our talented bakers bought to the June Clandestine Cake Club, Perth! The theme was gluten free, which gave us an amazing range of cakes! We expected almond/hazelnut meal cakes but we had a range of cakes made with all kinds of different flours, as well as an espresso roulade made with no flour or nut meal at all, and a raw cake! Big thanks go out to Liv, who hosted this months event - she was the hostess with the mostess!

Our cake club numbers jumped significantly when Renee Bergere of Great About Perth, Agenda City and Scoop featured a write up about us, and we were stoked when there were so many people interested!

What is kinda funny is... you'd expect the organisers of cake club to be fab bakers right? Well, Carolanne is, but of course, my cake didn't work! I made a baked cheesecake with roast pineapple in it, but it WOULD NOT set! ARGH! I learned something though, so now I know for next time to add a lot less pineapple! It goes to show that you do NOT have to be an amazing baker to come to cake club! You just have to have a love for baking and a want to socialise!

  1. WOW! I am so jealous! And I recognised the hazelnut and pear one, it's an all time favourite of mine! I'd have loved to be there! Wonderful.

    1. It was so awesome, you would have loved it! The cakes were amazing!! I didnt get to try the choc pear one, it got snapped up really quickly!!

  3. It was such a great afternoon & no crazy sugar rushes! I even brought cake to work today as a snack. A thought about your cheesecake, when making fruit jellies there are a few fruits you can't use, one of them is pineapple. I'm wondering if that had anything to do with the cheesecake not setting properly... I know it was baked, but the acidity in the fruit might have messed with the creamy/baked/setting stuff?

    1. Yeah it was awesome hey, had such a great vibe! Everyone was so stoked to be there :) I wasn't all sugar rushed either!! Felt pretty decent - went out for Korean bbq afterwards and then passed out on the couch haha, maybe the sugar DID get me a bit! But not nearly as bad as the last one!!

  4. You got a photo of every cake! I was too busy eating and talking that I didn't take many photos. Look forward to the next cake club.

    Here's the recipe for my lemon polenta cake with berries - I adapted this recipe and used almond flour in instead of plan flour.

    1. Brilliant thanks Ai Ling! I'll add it to the post :) Yeah I was chatting, eating, then spend 5mins taking pics, then chat, eat... the cycle continued for a while! I did try and get a pic of every cake! I think I missed Livs cake, because by the time I got to hers it was almost all gone!!

  5. My grandson has a huge range of allergies and my daughter is breast feeding him still so also has to steer clear of all the same things. Are any of the cakes free of not only gluten but also wheat, maize, soya, nuts, dairy products, nuts, strawberries, bananas and worst of all eggs? Tall order I know and actually the list is still longer! If so could you tell me where we might find the recipe for them as endless faiures work out very expensive!

    1. Wow that is quite a range of allergies! That must be quite a challenge to find anything dessert like to eat! None of the cakes had wheat in them, but a lot did have some form of nut meal - but then, some didn't, and used a range of different flours such as rice/green bean/tapioca/coconut/potato. I would say a vegan cake, with a mix of flours that she is able to eat would be a suitable option. I will put a call out on Twitter though to see if anyone can help you further!

    3. I also have some weirdy intolerances in addition to a gluten/wheat allergy. I have found Sue Shepherds FODMAP cookbooks very helpful as they take into consideration more than just gluten.
